What to know before you cut
- Shelves sag over time, and the longer the span the more they sag. Check your length and load with the free shelf sag calculator before you cut.
- Tall, shallow units should be fixed to the wall. The preview warns you when the proportions call for it.
- A thin back panel is optional: it stops the unit racking sideways and hides the wall.
Frequently asked questions
How much weight can a plywood shelf hold?
It depends on the length between supports, the thickness and the depth. Use the shelf sag calculator: it shows how much a shelf will sag under your load and how thick it needs to be.
Do I need to screw it together?
No. The shelves cross the sides at half-laps, so it goes together without hardware. A drop of glue at each crossing makes it permanent.
Can I use thinner plywood?
Yes. Enter the real thickness of your board and every slot is recalculated. Thinner board means shorter safe spans, so check the sag.
Does the wine rack fit champagne bottles?
Set the bottle diameter yourself: about 3" (75 to 80 mm) for wine and a little over 3 1/2" (88 to 90 mm) for sparkling wine.
