Living hinge box

A box whose lid is its own hinge. A pattern of fine cuts lets one strip of wood bend around the back corner, so there is no metal and nothing to glue on. Set the size and the hinge spacing to match your material.

      Questions

      How flexible is the hinge?

It depends on the spacing between the lines and the length of each cut. Closer lines and longer cuts bend more but are more delicate. Flex the hinge gently by hand before assembly.

What material and thickness should I use?

Use 1/8" (3 mm) birch plywood, basswood plywood or MDF. Measure the real thickness with calipers and enter it under Material, laser and sheet, because the joints are calculated from it.

Do I need to set the kerf?

Yes, once. Cut a 3/4" (20 mm) square, measure it and enter the difference as your kerf. The joints are compensated, so the parts press-fit. The default suits most CO2 lasers.
